History of Chiropractic

“Talk the Tic” Tuesdays is all about dispelling the myths of Chiropractic.  Chiropractic should be as accepted as all other forms of medicine, and I’m hoping for you as the reader that by the end of these specific blog posts, you not only understand where chiropractic came from; but also why it is crucial to the future of healthcare and medicine.

So, let’s start with the history of Chiropractic.  Chiropractic was founded by D.D. Palmer (#usinginitialsfornames).  Think of him as a high level wizard that went rogue.  D.D. came from Canada and was very versed in many healing modalities, including magnetic healing.  Think of this as like a Jedi using the Force to heal, but less in a galaxy far, far away, and more in a galaxy closer to home…Iowa.

Okay, that’s still it’s own galaxy, but it’s a lot closer.

In the year 1895, D.D. Palmer was working in his office and as legend goes, a janitor by the name of Harvey Lilard was cleaning his office at night.  D.D. Palmer was a pretty social guy, and often tried talking to Harvey Lilard.  He learned that Mr. Lilard wasn’t born deaf, but became deaf later on in life.

D.D., ever the healer and do-gooder Jedi, wanted to help Harvey. The theories vary on HOW he exactly performed the first chiropractic adjustment. We here at Nerd Chiropractor believe that he was very specific and analytical with his approach. Needless to say, after the adjustment (or maybe another one or two) something miraculous happened….Harvey Lilard could HEAR!

D.D. decided to call his technique chiropractic from the greek words “khiro” (meaning hand) and “praktikos” (meaning do).  Literally the translation turns into “done by hand.”  Pretty cool, right?

D.D. Palmer, his son, and grandson began their life’s work to promote and fight for the acceptance of chiropractic in modern day history and medicine. This was met with challenges, anti-trust lawsuits, and skepticism. I believe that this has lingered into the information shared about Chiropractic today. But here’s something I want to emphasize, from where D.D. Palmer began, we have come a long way in research, scientific proofs, and continual development.

True Chiropractors today follow the trends of neuroscience, evidence based practices, and research.  While our heritage may be controversial, our lineage is not.
